Spring is sprung, the birds are singing and the sun is shining! I don’t know about you, but I am ready to break out the spring/summer wardrobe and reveal a bit more skin (and NOT the pale, pasty kind please). I wear sunscreen daily and don’t spend prolonged periods of time in the sun to avoid sun damage/melasma, so the best tan for me is a Self Tan!

I assure you, if you take a bit of extra time to get your self tan started, the only thing you need to do going forward is reapply every couple of days to maintain the color. You will look like a bronze goddess, without any UV damage!
These are the 5 steps I use to achieve a fool-proof self-tan application:
- Exfoliate skin with a body scrub such as DERMAdoctor KP Duty Dermatologist Body Scrub with Chemical + Physical Medi-Exfoliation or Ole Henriksen Rub n’ Buff Salt Scrub. It is also important to pay special attention to the knees and elbows, which can bank more dead skin than other areas (if your elbows or knees are darker than the surrounding skin, consider use of B.Kamins Chemist Elbow, Knee and Foot Treatment Kit). After exfoliating, massage in a good quality moisturizer with antioxidant protection like Priori Advanced AHA Hand and Body Revitalizing Lotion into the knees and elbows to head-off extra dry skin soaking up too much sunless tanner.
- Shake up the self tanner product. My absolute favorite is Cellex-C Bio-tan Sunless Tanning Gel (worth the extra money), however California North Titanium Self Tanner and Rodial Brazilian Tan Light are also fantastic. Massage the product into your skin in even doses, whle working in an organized pattern (a circular motion) to avoid missing a spot. If you are using a spray-on product, you’ll still need to even it out by hand for the best result. Remember, wherever you stop, the color will stop. Have a friend do the tough to reach spots like your back, or try this trick: use Body Buddy Non-Absorbent Lotion Applicator, put some tanner on it and work it over your back.
- Once you’re done, thoroughly wash your hands (make sure to get under your nails) to prevent staining your palms. Wear disposable exam gloves when applying sunless tanner if you like (look for ones that are made of nitrile if you’re allergic to latex).
- Follow the package directions for how long you need to wait before dressing or touching anything (self tanners can turn other things brown, like your couch or bed linens). Don’t bathe or work uolp a sweat for several hours after the application to prevent streaking.
- To keep the color up, reapply every few days.
You will love the results!
Excellent advice Tricia! Thanks for the great tips.
One of my co-workers recommended for me to use Titanium Self Tanner. I was hesitant of it having the usual sunless tanner hurdles such as the “self tanner smell” an orange-ish color and blemish breakout. She gave me her secret tip of useing KP Duty scrub first. I figured since she has always made great recommendations for my skin care needs I’d put all concerns aside. Guess what? She hit the nail on the head, again! No SMELL, GREAT TAN GLOW, A SMOOTH SILKY SKIN SURFACE, along without A SINGLE BLEMISH to treat. So a huge thanks, to my trusted co-worker for solving my sun damaged, farmer’s tan needs.
Has anyone used the body buddy applicator with good results?
How long does the tan last for you?
Hi Brandy,
Did you use the tanner on your face and body along with the KP Duty scrub?
I haven’t tried either yet. Thanks for the info!
Melissa
How to use self tanners when you also use products that exfoliate the skin or accelerate the skin’s turnover?
I use (depending on the area, the moment and the skin condition to treat) salicylic acid (nose), glycolic acid and isotretinoin. It seems as if the self-tanners don’t work while I use those products (and I can’t stop nor want to stop using them). Is there any way to work around this? To get the self-tanner effect without stopping the use of those products mentioned above?
great advice. I have the KP duty scrub — never thought to use it before self tanning. I was thinking of going to one of those mystic spray tanning booths again and trying these tips.
I am looking forward to trying the California North Tanner
another quick tip, after applying the self tan lotion, use an old, smooth cloth to lightly brush over the areas of your body that absorb the self tanner more than others. i.e. knees, ankles, etc. This helps to remove some of the excess product and for some reason, I don’t end up with dark spots.
I tried the California North Tanner and was pleasantly surprised by the nice scent and tanning color. It works quickly and is easy to keep up the color.
Does anyone else feel that the Cellex-C Bio-Tan is bettter and worth the extra money?
Thanks for the tips, I’m always the guinea pig in my group of friends for trying self-tanners. . .it’s my mission to find one that works!
I have also heard the California North tanner is good, however I am very fair skinned and am worried about a natural looking product. Does anyone know if this product works for very fair skinned people or any other suggestions? I have used the KP Duty scrub and I love it!
Yes – the California North Titanium Self Tanner is great for Fair Skin. It is very subtle.
The titanium self tanner is wonderful! It really gives a great color. Here’s another tip: after you wash your hands, use lotion on your hands to blend the area between where you washed and where you didn’t so that you don’t get an obvious unnatural tan line.
This is great! I just purchased the California North self tanner but have not used it yet. It smells really nice in the bottle so hopefully it will when it’s activated. I hope it looks better than the Mystic tan. It seemed a little dirty and did not fade very well.
I just started using KP Duty for KP on my arms.. I’m excited to see it will double as a prep prior to sunless tanner!
Well I just starting using these products and already see a different in my face. I will have to try the KP Duty too since I love to use self tanner.
Has anyone ever heard of oxygen tanning. Its a safer alternative to normal tanning with better results.
Guys, A friend suggested me to drink lots of water for skin care beauty does water really affect skin care? If yes then how also How much water should one drink per day?
You simply want to make sure that you are drinking a minimum of 8 glasses a day. We have a recent website article posted about this very topic that you will find to be of interest…
