There seems to be no shortage of urban myths out there regarding skin care. I thought I would clear up some of this misinformation for all of you who have been kind enough to keep me updated.

- Tanning your skin in preparation for those winter tropical trips is NOT a good idea! You damage your skin as much as if you get burned on the beach.
- Chocolate does NOT cause acne.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an irritant, NOT a carcinogen.
- AHAs may cause irritation, NOT advance the aging process. AHAs also do NOT cause skin cancer.
- Retin A and Renova do NOT cause skin cancer.
- Facial Exercises may worsen deep facial expression wrinkle lines. Think about it; fine wrinkles are due to a loss of collagen which are completely unrelated to muscle. Thickening the muscles of expression (think frown lines for instance) WORSENS the deeper wrinkles. That’s why we use Botox!
- Accutane does NOT cause future problems with pregnancy, only during treatment and for 30 days after stopping the medication. And ONLY in women.
- Waterproof sunscreen can make you go blind. Where do these stories come from?
- Carmex, a cold-sore and chapped-lip ointment is NOT addictive. Whether it is useful or not is a different issue, but it is most definitely not a contributing factor to an addiction.
- Antiperspirants with aluminum do NOT cause breast cancer. This is one of the most widely disseminated myths out there, directly aimed at women’s understandable concerns about this deady disease. The American Cancer Society, the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and other major organizations have come out to denounce this lie.
I hope you have had fun reading these as well as learning something new. Thank you for taking the time to read our blog.
Interesting post, especially the part about antiperspirants. That is a common urban legend.
Not many reasons for which I’d browse a website. The older I get; the worrier. And this is all helpful info.
Learned something new! Thanks
I don’t know why I was surprised that facial excercise can actually worsen wrinkles…I guess it does make sense, but I was under the impression that excercies could help.
I use Retin A and wasn’t even aware that some believe it to cause skin cancer. Good to know!
I love to read skin care articles written by professionals. As a consumer and a woman, I have a right to know the truth about skin care products and what they can and can’t do.
Am glad you dispelled the myth about chocolate causing acne!! Chocolate always gets a bad rap & it’s good qualities (think dark chocolate) are often disregarded.
Interesting stuff. Especially about the SLS. Every else it is stated it is bad for the environment.
Wow. Good to know about these myths. I heard about the antiperspirants causing breast cancer. Most of the others I didn’t know about. And it’s great that chocolate does not cause acne. Great article.
Thank you for great information! I also like reading articles from a trusted source as it is often times confusing as to what and who to believe.
This is a good start for the blog. I was looking for some other information, but I will check with the DermaDoctor website.
I had heard that antiperspirants with aluminum cause breast cancer; it is good to know that they don’t.
Thanks so much for this. I always debate with my friend whether or not Chocolate causes Acne. She just won’t believe me when I say that it doesn’t. That’s okay tough. I have nice skin and I enjoy my Chocolate.
Very informative. I very much like the antiperspirant that derma has to offer. It definitly doesn’t leave a residue.
Thanks
Thank you for the information. Specifically the information about facial exercises. I have a friend that swears by a facial exercise device, but this makes perfect sense. I will have to pass this information on to her.
Thank you for this informative article! I read many of these myths from the internet. We should not believe everything on the internet unless from a trusted source.
Very interesting acticle. My husband swears that chocolate causes his acne problems so i’ll have to let him read this as well!
Good article, interesting info. How does one tan responsibily? I don’t like being orange from the fake stuff.
That about waterproof sunscreen is just hilarious, maybe if you apply it on the eye and don’t wash in the next week.
